Gelston - 04 Dec 16

Heading to the range (earlier than normal to beat the light disappearing as the days draw in!!!) the day dawned bright and clear. 11 hardy souls turned up for the last shoot of the season with 3 of our normal contingent competing at Diggle – the dates won’t coincide next year folks – and 3 of the confirmed attendees not making it things were looking good for an early finish. However (why is there always a however?), as it got closer to getting the shoot started the big yellow thing in the sky started to put in an appearance over the horizon. It’s not often that us shooters complain about a beautiful sunny day, but on this range in winter we do! For those that don’t know the layout out of the Gelston range it lies almost directly North to South and as the sun makes its merry path across the sky its low attitude puts it directly in the face of the shooters and spotters, and just as bad, puts the targets into full shadow of the backstop making the job of sighting in almost impossible. To compound the problem today, there was a reasonable frost overnight and the sand on the backstop was frozen – no splash as well as difficulty seeing!

The RO of the day and spotters did their best to get at least 1 detail for those shooting for minor places in the league underway but by 1pm it was apparent that it wasn’t going to happen and we had to regrettably give in to the sun (!!!) and cancel the shoot. Thus the placings promulgated after the November shoot are now confirmed as final for 2016.

Congratulations to all those achieving placings in the 3 categories and commiserations to those that didn’t. Hopefully you will all be back next year for another season of good banter with a bit of long distance shooting thrown in for good measure.

Before signing off may I take this opportunity to thank Darrel McIlreavy who organises the shoots, Glyn Cartwright our trusty spotter without whom many people would not be on target, the club members who have RO’d during the season, the many visitors we have had from afar – we hope you enjoyed your visits and are all welcome back anytime, but perhaps most of all, you, the regular attendees. Without you all it wouldn’t be worthwhile running a competition and I can’t think of a more enjoyable way to spend a day than with like-minded souls with a lot of banter and hilarity thrown in, so to you all I say thank you and look forward to seeing you all again in March 2017.

I think stickledown range at bisley is NNW.

I don't like the sun shining on the targets.for me the orange markers blend in on the tan on the fig11s.i have terrible trouble seeing them.sometimes unless they're bang in the middle I can't see them at all.we have tried different flueresent colours and it's no better.ive no problem seeing them on a roundal.its almost pointless on a hot sunny day.the miraging makes it impossible.quite often I ask for a spotter.sometimes when the marker is pointed out to me I can see it.more often than not i cant.this is my one and only excuse.
