Swarovski1 Posted October 24, 2016 Report Share Posted October 24, 2016 I did a cof at last 1000yd day with my 284's first time out.i used a untested 52.5gr rs60 180gr hybrid load.ive found now the cases with shiney spot on are tightish closing bolt after prepping.i haven't measured the case head yet but i guess the bolt sides and ejector is a squeeze.my question is can I take off 2 or 3 thousandths off the head to sort this. Swarovski1 Posted October 24, 2016 Author Report Share Posted October 24, 2016 After measuring everything I went on YouTube to see how t3 bolt comes apart lol.did that.picked the tightest case then slackened the locking ring off turned the die down and resized.tried chambering it.felt better.did that process a few more times until I could feel the slightest resistance on the last bit of the bolt shutting.resized a few more and all was good.retigthened lock screw and resized all again and reseated primers.never had a tight bolt before probaly coz I use to oversize the cases.i might make a reloader yet .i have loaded enough for a cof sunday and some of loaded rounds are tightish.will they be ok to shoot or should I pull them and reload them again.thanks for replies. Surely not by chambering one, (other than on the range with the rifle pointing at the target)? That way madness lies...................... Ejector marks usually signify excessive pressures...sometimes residual sizing lube can contaminate the chamber and prevent the neck end of the round gripping the chamber and causing the whole case to slam back into the boltface rather than the rear simply stretching back ....this can produce EJ marks. Brillo Posted October 25, 2016 Report Share Posted October 25, 2016 Neil, If your chamber has a competition throat and the COAL is therefore close to mine with the hybrids (3.218") the previous load you used is right is right on the edge of high pressure. Just because someone said their load is 52.5 grains of RL17 they might have been using a slow batch and you might have a fast batch, that's why we do load development. As Brillo says, 52.5 grains is right on the edge and RL17 has a reputation of not showing pressure and then spiking very quickly. Now it might be accurate with that powder charge but your cases will be fubarred in six firings or less. Your load was never going to blow the action up, but you owe it to yourself and the people you shoot around to do things properly. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It gives so much speed it's hard not to want to use it.i you had followed my thread my 284 you would of seen some of my load development target's Elwood, ive did some research and I new 52,5grs would be near max, I just hapoened to have more of this load developement load made up at different seating depths than the 52gr load so I shortened them to the shortest oal and made a few more enough for zero and a cof. Lukas_K Posted November 1, 2016 Report Share Posted November 1, 2016 Also note that a tight-headspaced round (tight-ish on closing) results in slightly higher pressure as compared to a rightly full-sized one (same load). Your rounds will lose a few fps in velocity and may need a click or two more at distance than what you´ve previously observed.
