UKBRA Benchrest Round 6 – 3^rd September 2016

100 yards - Saturday

On arrival at Diggle the weather doesn’t seem too bad, we are coming towards the end of summer now……..

19 entries today for what is the last league match of 2016 and in Heavy Varmint the top 3 is all to play for with nobody having sealed the championship this year before the last shoot, Messer’s Bottomley, Maunder and Lenton step forward to see who takes this one.

Sporter class has however had the top spot already taken by Stuart Benson, but 2^nd through to 4^th seem fairly open…… Let battle commence.

It’s forecast to be a bit breezy today and it’s a lovely East Wind which on A range is notoriously problematic, watch out folks it’s all going to be about wind reading.

What do we spy, a new HV shooter, Mike Hutton has had his arm twisted by Jonathon Walker to get himself a proper Benchrest Rifle, well done, let’s see how it goes, remember the rules Mike, let the old timers win on your first outing!

Jonathan Walker and yours truly start by breaking the golden rule of Benchrest, shooting a decent group on the Warmup match, let’s hope this doesn’t get worse. Well one thing that did get progressively worse during the day was the weather…………

The wind got up, but so did the rain, the targets coming back to be measured resembled a bad job at wallpapering and all credit to those poor souls that were changing targets, many thanks to all of you. Stuart Benson (AKA The Shooting God) was renamed the Shooting Cod today after he took a swim during a target change, remember folks always pack your flippers!!!!

With the increasing wind came more tail wind that was now fishtailing, everyone seemed to be getting the odd stray shot from time to time……. That is except MIKE HUTTON, having rebidded his rifle the night before after being a little over enthusiastic with removing a glue in action, he seemed to be shooting amazing groups. When asked what his secret was….. Shoot no sighters, don’t clean and don’t watch the windflags, we are clearly all doing this all wrong.

6 people shooting one or more groups in the “Ones” today, which given the conditions was no mean feat. Jeanette Whitney looked like she was going to take the Small Group patch with a 0.157” but yours truly sneaked in on match 4 with a 0.148” to just seal it.

In Sporter Class, Stuart had the league sewn up, but today Emily was putting her wind reading to good use and shooting some consistent groups, to finish with a win and take second place in the league.

Stuart narrowly edged Emily out of the Small Group patch, but there were some very respectable Twos and Threes shot by the Sporter Class shooters in what turned out by the end of the day to be truly horrible conditions.

Many thanks to everyone that helped out today, packing up and changing targets etc in the rain is never fun, but the organisers and shooters do appreciate your help. Also thanks to everyone for your help during the year.
