1000 yard Benchrest Competition Sunday 4th September

Apologies for the delay in this report, the family, yours truly included, have been struck by the winter sickness bug!

Excuses out the way now for my version of what happened just over a week ago. The last 1000yard shoot of the season and for most everything was still up for grabs, although for most places there were a limited number of contenders, it was likely to depend as much on who turned up as it did how they performed.

As we approached Diggle it was evident that the planned early start was unlikely to occur – low cloud was no so much obscuring the target area but the back-stop and hence unsafe to commence. As a well organised lot we put our waiting time to good use and had the UKBRA AGM. Thanks to all for their participation in what was a pleasant and constructive meeting – Bruce will publish the minutes sometime soon.

Numbers looked a bit down and a few familiar faces missing! As they say “you need to be in it to win it”, so a few folks may have potentially lost out on medals as they were not here. Welcome to Darrell and Lewis McIlreavy from Galloway Small Arms Club and “long time no see” to David Leslie.

“Scores on the doors were”; 2 Heavy guns, 8 Factory Sporters and 17 Light Guns, 28 in total, no my maths are OK, one Gentlemen was just practising. So with a bit of a scramble we were ready and the weather was permitting by about 11:30. A bit of judicious planning ensured that those in contention for league places were relayed together then no arguments about who had the best wind.

Weather – obviously now clear enough to see, not a gales but a healthy right to left cross wind, this seems to have been the prevailing wind for most of this year’s competitions. Looks manageable but if it drops mid string it could certainly open up the groups.

Light guns to the fore today.

Light gun battle one was between Sean Broxham and Bruce Lenton, Bruce won out not by any startling record groups but by incredible consistency, with only 40m separating his 4 groups (203-243mm), Sean unfortunately on the day could not match Bruce’s groups, nor consistency. Battle two was between Mal Roberts and myself, in terms of consistency Mal matched Bruce but I was lucky with a couple of just sub 200 groups to get the edge. But that was not the end of the story a few “dark horses” were still to have a go, Luke Wadsworth had 2 groups well below 200mm but was just out of it due to his first group, Willy Dixon had the small group of the day at 140mm but his last group put him in second place rather than first. Steve Dunn’s first 3 groups looked like he was on the road to first place until “confusion in the butts” with his target dropped mid string left him with a unrealistic fourth group. Then there was still Vince to shoot in the afternoon, who was pushed down the pack by his final group. Despite the wind there were some very good groups in the light guns – well done all.

Lunch on the hoof as they say now for the Heavy Guns, Factory Sporters and a few remaining Light Guns.

Heavy guns only two today with a few regulars missing, must have been the thought of the AGM, so both will get a prize but in which order? Unfortunately Emily has to take a penalty in group two due to a gun problem but in today’s wind John’s experience and 7 WSM versus 6 BR gives him the edge over Emily. Emily has a modicum of revenge with the smallest group at 257mm, which for any one shooting ten shot groups will appreciate is not bad at all.

Factory Sporters – 8 today. As per usual Alan Seagrave is up there mixing it with the Light Gun’s shooting 3 low 200mm groups, his second unfortunately just into the 300’s, however, it is enough for him to beat Nick Parkin who has a couple in the 200’s and a couple in the 300’s, who in turn just beats Paul Pendleton. Paul just misses out on small group with his 179mm first group, who has Factory Sporter small group? You can always rely on him to do something – small group honours go to David Leslie with a 174mm group. Unfortunately for Stuart Benson “divine intervention” deserts him today on group 3 and he is left out of the today’s running.

As ever thanks to those who help in the butts and elsewhere and a special thanks to Vince for keeping us all in control and running the day, as our American cousins would say, it’s “like herding cats”.
