UKBRA Benchrest Round 4 – 16th July 2016

100 yards - Saturday

Well, we are starting to get into summer proper now, only 1 fleece required and the rain isn’t too bad at Diggle. In all seriousness we only suffered from a little drizzle at the start and end of the day and other than that it was pretty good!

Benchrest at 100 yards seems to be making somewhat of a resurgence, we had 10 entries in Sporter class (more than Heavy varmint), it’s great to see some new faces each time, and even better when they return for a second or subsequent visit. Some of those have custom rifles, semi-custom and factory guns, a true showing of what this class is all about…….. Even better, the winner is going to walk away with an upgraded prize of £20 for breaking the magic number of 10 entries.

It’s not often in the UK that we see “teen aggs.” – i.e. an average of 5 x 5 shot groups less than 0.2”, some feat of achievement, we don’t even get one every year, so today we had one, Chris Maunder, using a barrel, which has had over 2300 rounds down it, managed to steal the day with a 0.1760” agg. Sadly he didn’t break the UK record, which has stood at 0.1660” for some 17 years, but nonetheless very well done Chris. In shooting this agg, Chris shot 2 “Twos”, 2 “Ones” and a “Zero”, yes another “Screamer”!

Needless to say the rest of us were then playing for 2nd place and onwards, despite this, there were some very good groups 4 people shooting “Ones” today, Messer’s Maunder, Walker, Perdeaux and Lenton all managed a small one, then there were plenty of “Two’s”. Chris Maunder with his “Zero” of 0.094” managed to bag the Small Group Award as well.

However a healthy tussle for second through to fifth took place between Messer’s Bottomley, Evans, Walker and Lenton……… see below for the results

The weather was pretty good, a nice right to left breeze, but that swung round after match 3 to become more of a head wind, which started to challenge most shooters, giving rise to some of the dreaded “Vertical”

The Sporter Class guys and gals were making the most of the good conditions with some very nice groups, young Emily Lenton posted 3 groups in the “Two’s”, but “Shooting God” Stuart Benson managed to squeak past Emily when the head wind kicked in, the benefit of experience. Just behind was Oliver Monk with his 223, posting some very consistent groups (2 in the “Two’s”).

Emily managed to seal the Small Group award in the warmup match with the first of her “Two’s”, but then managed to beat her own group later on in the day with a 0.256” group, HV shooters would happily settle for groups like that.

As mentioned before it really was nice to see such a great turn out in Sporter Class, a great way into the sport and I know that a lot of the UKBRA international teams have come into the sport via the “Sporter” class, this is the future. I hope you all enjoyed your day and will be coming back again.

Here are the results……….

Our next outing at Diggle is the weekend of 13th and 14th August, so please as always come along and have fun, we may even get some more sun, it is supposed to be summer after all and we aren’t doing badly for weather at the moment.

However before that there is the Diggle Fly Shoot on Sunday 31st July. Feel free to turn up for 9am with 15 rounds of ammo and enough for your sighters at 500 yards prone!

Ive got a bit of a silly question, is it possible to put say 3 shots frew the same hole then fire the last 2 shots over of to the side of the target not to spoil the group, some call it gamesmanship and some call it cheating, I guess things like this has happened in comps, how is the shooting monitered in the situation.swaro

Neil,no doubt it happened in the very early days, but it does not now....at 100y BR comps (eg Diggle) there is a moving backer sheet behind the record target shot at;and this backer moves slowly horizontally behind the record target, unseen, and can't have any hole shot in it,unless the bullet first passes through the record target.

This then gives 5 distinct holes, one for each of the record shots, which correlate with those 5 "group' shots on the record target...(and will be very close to being in a straight line if the group is good...record meaning the 5 competition shots recorded, not 'best ever records)'...sighters will be elsewhere (lower) on the backer)....just as the sighter shots are on the two lower targets on the 'record' target sheet.

There has to be five such backer holes for a valid target-and no chance of getting of two before the backer has moved a little...

(At 1000 yards it has to date been impossible to put all shots "frew the same hole",even with a 6.5-06,so not yet an issue, but as sub 2 inch groups appear, some technology may need to be introduced..... :-)

Pretty foolproof, and genius proof.....it's also some evidence of cross shooting-someone mistakenly fires at your target, but that's too bad..as it cannot be certainly proven to be a cross shot (there will of course be an extra hole in the backer)And very, very occasionally the backer motor may take a hit.....doh!

Queen has a capital Q and English has a capital E

FFS you shouldn't be so ...... and practise what you preach

And anyway - it's The King's English - comes from the title of a book written by the Fowler brothers in 1906 on English grammar - nothing to do with the Queen.
