Ar 15 strightpull type rifles?

I'm currently pondering over weather to sell my 357 and 223 and acquiring a ar15 type rifle. It will need to be suitable for foxing as that's what I use my 223 for,but mainly for target work at 100m and 300m. We do some club competitions which are set at 100m, they are prone off your elbows no bipod or rests and 10 shots in 90 seconds. At the moment Im terrible at it, as I can't seem to recover from chambering the next round and changing the mag. So if I was to go for an ar which ones are best to go for, barrel length, twist rate and do I go 223Ai as I read you can use 223 ammo and the 5.56mm stuff. I have all the gear for loading standard 223. I have used a Bradley arms bar 15, I think it was called and to me it seemed quite well built.

Any pointers would be greatfull.

Cheers.

Mark Bradley who made that BAR 15 is on here as Bradders drop him a PM or wait for him to sense an AR thread with the black rifle force. I'm sure he or Dave Wylde of Valyrie rifles (Baldie on here) will be best placed to give you advice as they make them and shoot them.

All I can tell you is I love mine and want another which is unhelpful.

Thanks for that, it's looking at the work the two mentioned above got the mind pondering. So bradders makes the bar 15 and baldie makes the others. I will have nose at the websites again. As said I don't know anything about them really.

527-as advice given-Mark and Dave are your experts here-especially for range use.

You will not benefit from an Ackley Improved chambering-another 100 fps is of no consequence for fox,or 300 yards ranges (and especially in a man op AR15); but do consider a 'Wylde' chamber (not Dave Wylde-but ask him) since you mention using 223 commercial and 5.56 mil ammo-you can have more confidence in the Wylde chamber, with less chance of sticky extraction (that may be what you really meant, anyhow?)

You won't need to change magazines for ten rounds,so that's one issue solved;man op is probably easier than bolt with some practice. AR15s are often rested on their large magazine -if allowed, that helps.

I'd consider a fairly short barrel for maneuverability in foxing,if it's from a cab or restricted space-and a 1 in 8 would keep most ammo (bullet weight) options open-but ask Dave and Mark for current target preferences. But it is try and see,for how it feels,as ever. You have nothing to gain from a long barrel (22/24 is common in bolt actions, but most ARs are shorter. Remember a moderator will add a few inches.

No doubt experienced foxers will chip in on any detail points on AR15 use.But ballistically-what kills foxes-it's a 223 like any other, once the bullet leaves the barrel, though not the cheapest tool for that job.

Dont get too tied into all the bells and whistles-bear in mind what you want to do with it-you want one stock eg,that you like-if there are another 20 you don't,someone else might, but so what?

Thanks for that goal I did mean Wylde.

Bradders, the Bradley arms bar 15 I shot,is that something you have on the shelf, or is it a special order, what would you recommend as in barrel length and twist and which bullet if I was to load for it,or is it better using the mill surplus stuff.

I usually have most parts on the shelf inc barrels, and as I am only 20 mins away from the London proof house, getting something rustled up pronto is b=never a problem

Personally speaking, if all shooting is to be done at medium distance =s then I'd always recommend a 16" barrel in a fast twist, I use 1:8s as that is always more than you need and anything faster is wasted and slower will handicap you.

With that you can shoot any commercially available bullet up to 80gn (82 also)

77 SMKs are hard to beat, but you can also shoot good surplus with acceptable results...depending on your needs

Something along these lines would do the job all day long

Thanks for that,I'm not ready to buy at the moment, need to make room and free the slot, flo is happy about the one for one from 223 bolt to straight pull 223 Wylde.

Its going to take a few months to sort everything out.
