Are you talking about a commercial tunnel or just something your thinking of knocking up for your own use?

It depends on the calibre being fired. One of my clubs has a 100m that's 1.5m diameter and it happily accommodates everything from FAC air to .50 BMG.

 

If you were only firing fast moving rounds with very little drop then you could go smaller but you get a ground effect style deflection if the bullet goes near the edge.

was just thinking 12 inch drain pipe dug into a trench outside the back door

Or you could build a hut at the catcher end, one range I have been to has exactly this set up, the tube is around two feet in dia.

Well why not-though windless days are an option.

 

But ask too,how will you feel if the tunnel groups are over 1/2 moa...or more? :-)

I've used a range where end to end containers are used. Very functional. Owner uses a bike to change targets!
