Not quite the magic number

I had an afternoon to kill today so took my younger guy Rob down to one of the farms I have access to. Sam the farmer told us there were a few rabbits about and he wasn't wrong. We scored roughly 20 in three hours plus three hares and assorted pest birds.

Rob decided to take his F-TR rifle for a little play but managed to forget to take all his come-ups.. The rig is an RPA CG-2000/ 32" Broughton/8-32 NXS/ McMillan prone with rear bag-rider tube/Mystic bipod, and damn accurate. He did recall the load was doing just over 3K with the 155 Scenars and the thing was correctly zeroed at 300yds. Least we knew that much so I fed it into the ballistics app on my iPhone and simply hoped. Turns out it was surprisingly accurate.

Excuse the terrible pics off the phone but it was later afternoon sun and not easy.

That's a hare he sconed first shot at 499yds. The tip of his finger is where it was, not that it gives you much of an idea. The Scenar drilled straight through high shoulder and there was barely a trace of blood. He did shoot some closer ones, ie just over 260yds and the projectile expanded a bit better but they're pretty tough and not ideal for varminting.

The gun was going well and he nailed two half-grown rabbits in quick successive shots, the first 347yds and the second one 5 secs later at 349yds. I was lucky enough to be allowed to shoot the sub-250 ones with the little .223. The cats are very happy..

Well you're sorta wrong there Edi- Rob had it on a charity trail ride the prev day and it ---filthy--

He took it to work where they have a proper waterblaster and that's why it looks good.

BTW, the .223 700 with your stock on it is still going beautifully. It's death to rabbits under 250yds without any effort. I still get a few at 300 with it but get a bit lazy on the wind calls..

Chris, just putting a similar light weight 223 for my son together but not sure if we stick it into an E-Tac or hunter stock. I am missing my 223 it is a cal one just has to have. btw, looks like Rob is shooting real well with that rig.

It would have helped Edi if we'd remembered to take along a rear bag. He made do with his fist or a rolled up jacket.

Agreed on a .223- boringly common but very effective. I've got three of them but "your" one gets the most use. The Rem VS is slightly more accurate but not as versatile. The other is a fully rebuilt BSA Hunter- custom stock/local barrel.. The jury is still out on its consistent accuracy..

Chris, never mind the rear bag, I would be happy not drowning (at least totally soaked) if going prone in our area.

Shot my brother in law's 308 remmy varmint fitted in a our hunter stock today at a Carter Country in Houston Texas area. The trigger was replaced by remmy and set at a guess of 5lb......maybe more, shot OK but she started walking away after a few shots, I am not used to that from my custom barrels. I'll adjust the trigger and we might have another chance before I fly back.

Have any pic on the BSA custom stock etc.?

This is my "walking varminter" with Edi's stock.

Basically a std SPS with Hardy can but she's pretty damn accurate, far more than a basic Rem deserves to be. It's accounted for a -large- number of game incl many goats and the odd deer. Digests bulk 55s I bring back from the US at ridiculously cheap prices- these still shoot well under an inch and I'm never surprised when it puts three into 1/2"
