kernel gadaffi
Hi all, I've a mate who's been a shotgun and air rifle user for many years, he has almost 5 years as a .22lr user on his first FAC and his renewal in due in February, with this in mind, he's in the process of moving up to a centrefire, from what he's told me, a .243 would be his weapon of choice and has a mentor with suitable land lined up. I gave him a two foot high bundle of shooting magazines to browse through, (and it saved me from having to hump them to the recycling spot), he's not well off and has a limited budget, he's been reading up and beasting the internet to get more information, he's spotted two used rifles, an A-bolt with a Nikon Pro-staff scope, mounts and a T8 for £650 and a Steyr Pro Hunter with rings, T8 and a 3-9*50 scope at £600. Would any of the above be worthy? Are there pro's/cons with any or both?
Scrumbag
I've seen some pro hunters with stocks that aren't the best...
spanner
I would go with the A Bolt, the Prohunters had awful flimsy stocks.
white van man
I've got a pro varmint in .223 the accuracy and engineering are superb, I don't find the stock a problem(maybe they are different than the pro hunter) Steve.
Brummy Mark
Hi, I had a pro Hunter for a while, great trigger, very good accuracy, yes some of the early stocks were bendy on a bipod, later ones were much better, I never had it worse then 1 moa with winchester or remington factory ammo. However and this is the big niggle - the magazines are utter crap, the feed lips wear away very quickly meaning the bolt picks up the round OK but the angles has changed and it slams the round in to the top of the chamber, Trying to get new magazines is difficult and expensive. On that alone I would go for the Browning.
banus02
good evening ,I have owned four steyr pro hunters never had a problem ,all mk2 still own two one .243 and one 6.5x55 not range rifle as the barrel warms up by the fourth shot but for stalking and fox excellent rifles,no problems freehand, off sticks or on bipod but.... do not fit a t8 buy a wild cat evolution and you will be happy chappy
Offroad Gary
I had a prohunter, i'd rather eat dogshjt sandwiches than have another one. A £400 t3 with a £250 s&b 6x42 would be a much better starters outfit. At least you'd sell it when you knew what you really needed.
soother223
Had a stey classic some years ago! Loved it!would love to have another... But I think if you could get a cheap tikka somehow then that would be a better option..
rover
Hi Tell him to stay away from pro hunter11. I have one 25-06 new out of the box, love the safety, bolt, look of barrel. You would never be able to use it on paper heats up so quickly even zeroing can be a problem. the synthetic stock is a joke flexes all over. First thing Sportsman said when Steyr told me to contact them as they are the importers was. Yes we do have a problem with pro hunter11 stocks flexing, you can pay to stiffen up stock or we can supply a wooden stock for £***. It was a joke Steyr did not want to know and weren't interested in my complaint. They were happy with the information Sportsman had given me, stiffen up stock or buy a replacement stock. Not great service for a brand new rifle. I could have sent it back to steyr for testing. But that would be without bipod and mod fitted, as they said that's a British problem for fitting them. I ended up sending it to Staffordshire Synthetic Stocks just caught it back. Jim
