My new .20 Tac

Well I finally got out to zero my new .20 Tac which I recently bought from gunnery three weeks ago.

Barry is a sound bloke and after talking about the rifle over the phone he knew I was serious about buying it. Because he didn't have any ground nearby for me to try it he offered to bring it from Wigan to Northumberland on the proviso that if I didn't like it I would pay his fuel which I agreed. I put my own scope on and after zeroing I put the first three shots through the same hole at 100yds, two more were not quite there and with a 1/2" group from my first five shots the deal was done.

Ive been away a bit since and today offered the first chance to get out and redo the zero having fitted the scope again and a new GRS stock. Five shots got me zero'd and then the first three shot group measured 1/4", I then went back to 200yds and the next 3 shot group went to 1/2" and needed a small tweak on the windage. I also found I needed to fudge the BC down to 0.230 based on my 3550fps velocity to get things to match up in shooter. Another couple of groups at 200yd confirmed things were good to go although I never repeated the 1/2" first group as the wind started to gust a bit but all the shots were good in terms of elevation and were still within 1/2" in that sense.

During this zeroing session the battery on my rangefinder gave up the ghost which was bad timing to say the least so I then had to go to a different permission on my way home which I knew better to see if I could find a shot. I parked up looking over a water trough which I knew the distance to as Ive shot over it many times before. The wind was 9mph full value and it was less than 5 minutes before the shot presented itself with this corby landing with his back towards me. 12 clicks up and 13 left for the wind saw him face down in the water thanks to a 40g vmax before he heard the bang.

What a great start to life with this new rifle, the shot was taken from the roof of the truck on bags to a known 315yds :)

Thanks again for your help Barry, you're a gent.

Nice rifle, Nice shot. At least at 315yds there is something left to pick up, any closer you tend to need a shovel. :)

Superb calibre, you will have great fun with it.

The best I have managed so far is a 0.14moa at 100 with my 20prac.

A 200yd zero means you can aim dead on at anything up to 250yd as the drop is never more than an inch high or low out to that distance.

Enjoy.

That's a very nice looking set-up. One question, what make are the scope rings? Thanks JCS

I bought the matching TET rings from Barry but my local gunsmith had asked me to try a set of cheap QD cam/lever rings for him and so far they have not lost zero on both this rifle and my 20BR, I have not yet tested them for repeatability which I might do today.

It seems crazy having a £2000+ outfit kitted out with sub £30 cheapo rings from eBay but then again if they continue to work well then maybe only the snob value would force me to change to the TET rings. Im not suggesting people should rush out and buy these as Ive probably only fired 100 rounds with two different rifles but so far I feel they work in the sense I have not experienced any zero shift. Im hoping that for my .22LR it will allow me to switch between a scope and NV.

Don't all pile in here lads on these rings, I know they should be of higher quality but I couldn't resist trying them just for the hell of it

you will have to let us know how the rings work out i'm sure theres a lot of us who would like to swap scopes but don't really trust these devices

Big Al. Thanks for the comments re set of cheap QD cam/lever rings. http://www.leapers.com/prod_detail.php?mitem=mount&level1=Scope_Ring&level2=&itemno=RQ2W3104&status=

One more question, would it not be an option to put the levers on the left hand side and keep them out of the way of the action port? Whenever possible I like to have the scope ring fastenings on the opposite side from the action port, although the last scope I mounted worked better when I swapped over the fastenings to the action port side.

Best regards

Being right handed I guess it just seemed natural to put the levers on that side of the rifle, I hadn't really thought too much about it. They dont interfere with the loading port and Ive never noticed them while using the rifle. Im sure the other side would work just as well also

Yes I like this Remy Barry for sure, best assured I will look after her :) The old Landy keeps going with a few quid here and there and makes for a great shooting platform.
