CliveWard
Hi All, Unfortunately no video this time Because last weeks fannying about getting the recording going and people shuffling around in the truck resulted in a clean over the shoulder miss. This particular area is NT so we didn't want to report another unsuccessful evening. Anyway the only fox we saw this evening was one that was hiding behind a fallen tree just on the edge of a rising wood around 80 yards away. I could see something was there through the thermal rifle scope but it was indistinct as I was only getting the edges of the heat signature and a bit of the head through the odd gap in the large obstruction it was hiding behind. We called and called and it just was not having it and sat there fast watching us. Then we changed tactic, rather than have it come to us we thought we'd make it bugger off and move away to where a shot might present itself. So on with the lamp at full chat accompanied by a chorus of noise from the truck while I kept an eye through the scope. Indeed it did move, further into the wood and to the right. Watching it through the trees on the thermal I only got 20-30% of it at a time but as it was moving all those small portions added up into a 100% identification. I slipped the safety off and set the trigger as I tracked it. It stopped at what it thought was a safe distance inside the wood and turned to see what all the commotion was about. I held on aim and gently increased pressure on the set trigger and down it went. The guys went to retrieve it, using a handheld thermal to pick it up in the woods. The fox was some 15-20 yards in and cleanly shot at the base of the skull. I was quite pleased as were the guys from the estate. One for redeeming myself after last weeks amateur hour and two for being able to make a shot that just wouldn't have been possible under a lamp or with more conventional night vision equipment. Paddy_SP
Well done, Clive - I'd be lost without my thermal spotter!
