I have just read a piece in the sporting rifle by Robert bucknell who bought a hd38s to try,he went out to try it and said he shone the lamp in the field and saw a fox but when he got in there it had gone.(why is he surprised).then he shines the lamp in another field and sees 2 sets of eyes through an hedge when he gets in there one went back in the hedge and the other made its way from them.what I am trying to say is for a man who is supposed to be a top foxer why would you use a lamp to spot when you have got a thermal with you.i cant understand that.

They were doing a piece for Fieldsports tv and needed to know they were looking at a fox. I have thermal and I certainly wouldn't be confident 1st time out. Even now I sometimes resort to the lamp to confirm the eyes before I start yomping cross country

Having discussed foxing on many occasions with Robert, he really knows his stuff at a very experienced level. He will have done what he done with good reason.

I use the 38s all the time and had it for nearly a year. I'm out with two mates who use a lamp we've all been doing night shooting for more years than we care to count. Just two nights ago I was spotting , with the thermal as we walked a fild, I had three rabbits in the 38s, but Luckly J had a feeling and used the lamp He was rite, there 200plus yards was Charly! When the weathers warm even at night the thermal will lett you down. When were shooting from the truck I use my Drone10x and then there's not been a problem. It takes awhile to read the 38s but don't get me wrong its the best bit of kit I've got and well worth the muney. Old dead wood will hold the days heat and to the novice look like something worth shooting. But on a cold day or night I've spotted rabbits out too over 500yards. But on a warm spring morning it missed a Chinese water dear at 200yards in a fild with the morning sun on it! (Yes J got that fox with the lamp) hope this helps explain a bit about using the 38s. As already stated its bought a new dimension to all our night shooting, but it ain't full proof and IDE recommend just going out time and time again to get a feel for it. One other down side is the eye you use to spot with will be night blind, not, a problem if you then put it to your Drone, but we've found it affects your aim when using a, lamp scope ( just spot with one eye shoot with the other) hope this helps.
