load for 1000yds TRG22

Recommended Posts

Sorry people, probably done to death but I was trying to shoot 1000yds at the weekend but was struggling to reach the gong. I got close at one point but did need a lot of elevation on the scope. The windage was good but I used most of my rounds and had to let someone else on the firing point. Weather was good with almost zero wind and guys were hitting the gong.

I'm using a TRG22 .308 with 24" barrel, north star moddy and a leupold 4 x 14 tactical mk4 scope.

The load was 178 A Max in brand new lapua brass with 43gn of vit n150, OAL was 2.8".

Some of the guys said maybe take the moddy off to up the fps.

Do you think I need more oomph by upping the load or is it worth while try 185 juggernauts?

It was good for 500yds with that load.

I know there is a lot more information required regarding the load but what I'm really asking should I be expecting to reach 1000yds with what I'm using?

cheers

Ive used factory GGG, Privi with great success out of a 20" .308 at both 1000 & 1100. Those ammo uses the 147gr FMJ so you should be easily get to 1k+ with the 178gr Amax.

It might be worth upping your loads if not already at max pressure!

Do you know what fps your loads are doing?

Mildot,

Sorry I have not chroned it.

I thought I was runing hot with 43gn but there is no sign of pressure.

Can I be looking at problems with neck tension, i use Lee dies?

I suppose I should chrono and maybe take it from there.

What would I need fps to reach 1000yds with a 178gn?

thanks

I've had no real success with my Sako TRG-22 with any bullet at 1000 yards. You need to be pushing the SMK Palma bullet at 2950 fps or faster to be consistent at that distance and my rifle would not do it. By that, I mean it would get there but with poor accuracy.

My best results were obtained with the SMK 175 gn pushed at 2750 fps or faster and the Berger 185 gn LRBTHP pushed at over 2650 fps, but I doubt if a 24" barrel would achieve that velocity.

You might want to try Reloder 17 /RS 60, as this is undoubtedly the speed king powder of choice.

Sniper, without muzzle velocity-and zero distance- figures are only good ball park.

Short of quite low fps, velocity is less about vertical than horizontal-wind error,-because you can compensate for elevation by dialling.Bullet choice likewise,BC is what matters as distance increases-again wind is the main issue.

308s generally need about 34 moa-ball park- to get to 1000.A few more fps will mean a click or two,and taking the mod off won't up the velocity-if anything rifles are slightly more accurate as exit gasses are less disruptive, let alone nicer to shoot!

You need to see splash really to walk shots in,or very good data into a ballistics program-or copy someone -if very similar.

At this stage-not on target yet-I'd not change much,by fiddling around with bullet choice, you could though check on here on back posts from Laurie, the master of all this.

But you want to just get on the gong-don't expect 100% hits, unless it's a big gong (15") and little wind.

Just as example 175 Sierra GK, BC.5, @ 2650 fps,200 zero is drop/drift 10mph at 1000y 387/99 inches and a

155Amax @2750 BC .435 is similar 382/112;and 185 Scenar BC .427 comes in at 498/130

Some others a quite a bit worse,so choice might matter (BC is a good guide).

Don't worry unduly about fine detail-YET- you just need to be peppering the gong, and very close, first.

Sniper,

The 'standard' in the US comps when folks ran 308's (that dates me! :( ) was the 175g SMK over 43.5g of Varget, giving around the 2600-2700fps dependant on the barrel and rifling form etc.

This was quite good out to 1000yards (about 10 point something mils from 100 yard zero). But a 1000 yards with normal 308 rifles is on the limits so you would only see a few shots at this distance on a competition, most were 900yards and less. Then the 'windcheaters' came out and a year later there was only one 308 in the top 20.

Basically appreciate the cartridge for what it can do in your rifle? Best not compare F-TR, Match or even TR velocities and combinations as they are 'on the edge' with loads, throating and barrel lengths compared to your TRG.

Be good to know what MV your were getting, needs to be up their a bit?

Thanks guy's for all your wisdom and opinions.

I will make some more loads, I have 175 smk and varget, i also have some other stuff to try.

I will try again and hopefully we can see where im landing and walk the shot onto the gong.

I'm not looking to push this to 1000yds all the time, I really just want to hit the gong at 1000yds now and again, mostly keep it for 100 to 600yds.

thanks for the help guys.

Good luck- absolutely realistic-and should be feasible with almost any reasonable load-certainly to 600,and you are not expecting 100% at 1000y

Once you see splash, you can of course walk any load in...hence don't buy a lot to try...get there with what you have first. This might help:

175 match king @ 2600 200 0/3 300 9/7 400 26/13 500 52/21 600 89/31 800 203/60 1000 387/100

(200zero,BC.496

Rem /Fed loading)

so SAAMI not hot)

10mph wind

drop/drift inches

Enjoy

Hi Sniper. Don't be disheartened. The visibility was ermm, challenging to say the least and not being able to see the splash made it doubly difficult and I was using a 8-32x56 scope. I struggled to get on the gong and despite being told to adjust the elevation it turned out to be windage......I'm now certain that I was just sliding past the edge of the gong most of the time as I was never more than 2moa elevation away from what got me on the gong.

When I first started shooting long range at Diggle I really struggled and it wasn't until I moved to the Berger 185 Juggernauts from 155 Scenars that things improved. I use 44.5gns of Viht N150 (which is fine in my rifle) behind them that was giving a MV of 2594fps over the chrono out of my 26" Remy 700 on Sunday. I also seat the bullets long at 10 thou off the lands and single load to give more case capacity rather than use the mag for taget shooting. I think you need to play about with your load a bit and run it over a chrono. I believe there may be a chrono available to hire at the next shoot which would allow the guys with ballistic apps on the range to give you a come up for 1000yds as long, as you know your zero distance.

Hope to see you at the next shoot.

David
