Dark chicken killer

7.30 pm Monday night seen me out with the thermal spotter and nv setup after a chicken thief which had caused quite a bit of carnage the previous night getting in with a farmers fancy breeds of chickens

in the pens he has built in his garden, 14 in total had been killed with 3 been taken.

I made use of a roofed silage pit which yet has to have the sides Yorkshire boarded and the waiting game began sitting 12ft off the ground with great view all round but especially over a farm track which runs alongside a big hedge from the farm buildings to a wood almost 400yards away with a big grass field each side full of ewes, the farmer said the feathers he had found lead to the wood.

After about 35minutes scanning with the thermal I picked up a heat source moving through the wood towards the edge I was facing, by the way it was moving gave it away immediately as a fox, looking through the nv I just got the odd flash of eye from the illuminator even when the fox was right at the fence line. It couldn't hide from the thermal...

Once at the fence line it made short work moving at a fair pace up the track spooking the sheep into a huddle, I could tell at this point it was a good sized animal which new exactly where it was heading for supper so I slipped behind the rifle to watch it progress through the nv scope.

Tracking the fox through the scope it passed a telegraph pole in the field about 90 yards out a which point a hare jumped up and ran back towards the wood at which the fox stopped side on and in a split second a v-max was sent through its chest with an almighty thump returning to my ears and the fox dropping without even a twitch.

I waited out until almost 11pm even had a few calls but apart from a few roe on the wood edge and the sheep nothing else showed and nothing has been back to the dead chickens since.

Walking over to retrieve the carcase for the farmer to dispose of even after a few hours had passed it still had a good heat source for the thermal to pick up. He was just shy of 19lb and was very dark pretty much all over especially his snout and underside. Glad to get another problem fox sorted in good time.

Nice one pc, did you go for the hd50s?

I can honestly say you won't look back they are such a good bit of kit.

It's set on "city" mode and "auto" refresh.

Tweak the brightness etc as the conditions change.

Enjoy it.

Off out later mate for its first outing, just got back from town been trying to find a replacement strap but no luck .only bit that looks like it could break, looks like being ebay for a couple of adapters

I used the strap of a video camera case for round my neck with two screw in 1/4" loops off eBay (see original thermal post) couple quid each I think. Sure I have a spare neck strap somewhere your welcome to if I ratch it out.

Thanks for your kind words - sadly, I can't put a link up on here as unlike several other major shooting websites, I would need commercial membership, which I can't afford.
