Enjoying the .17 HMR again

Hi All,

I'd felt a bit ambivolent to the old .17 recently after having a squib round lodge itself in the barrel and some hang fires with associated accuracy problems, but I thought I would give it a go again and set off with my oppo.

Confidence was not instilled when the first Rabbit we encountered got shot 'at', rather than shot. This was fairly close in and clever cloggs here forgot to hold under slightly.

Driving the stubble we then came across this chappie who came in quite nicely to a bit of squeaking from the driver.

I have to confess to not taking the shot, just in case the previous miss wasn't just me cocking up on the hold.

On to the next field and things got happier. Another rabbit, again fairly close in. This time I remembered to hold under a touch and down it went. Now I was happy the rifle was doing what it should, I just needed to drive it better :D

The highlight of the night was the final rabbit that was a more sensible distance of 100 yards or so and that too dropped as it should. Confidence restored!

There wasn't a great deal to get onto as the crops are quite high now so we can only work the margins, and they are getting a bit long.

Cheers

Well done, Clive - in my opinion the great thing about the HMR is that it is a cheap way to get lots of practice on live prey - something that would benefit a lot of deerstalkers who are sometimes too snobby about the small calibres to use them. As a result, they only use a few rounds a year with the result that too many animals get injured instead of killed.

As has been said, it,s a brilliant calibre.

Do you use the 17gr or 20gr bullets? I,ve found the 20,s to be much more accurate and much more reliable than the 17,s.
