100 Yard Benchrest - Taster Session

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks

Following on from a recent thread about where you could buy a used "Short Range BR" rifle, Vince kindly offered to let someone have a go with his.

If the UKBRA was to run a taster session at Diggle where people could actually have a go at short range BR with "Proper" BR rifles, would people be interested?

It is currently our "off season" so it is a good time for this and this year we have invested in a full set of windflags etc so people can get into the sport without having to invest a fortune at the start.

We run a "Sporter" class at our competitions, which is for people to basically bring any gun and have a go. This class has it's own league, prizes etc and is fiercely contested. It is also an excellent way into full on Short Range BR.

Ask Foxing2night, GaryW, GaryS etc on here they are a few who have come through via this route.

The UK did very well at this year's European Championships and I genuinely think our standard of shooting is increasing as our numbers do.

So in short, who would be interested? We would make it a fun day with as much involvement as possible, the ability to shoot your own rifle and shoot "proper" BR guns as well.......

Cheers

Bruce

Take it a Harris bipod will be a no no?

Several people have started shooting from a Bipod and then moved onto a rest, others have kept shooting off a bipod and shoot very respectable groups, so in answer........ Shoot what you have and give it a go!

OK Folks, so it looks like there is some interest......

I will try to organise something and get back to people with some suggested dates.

Watch this space folks.

I'll try and make it, do i need a slidey front thingy?

Gary- if you come to the range there will be a fair few of the br shooters that will bring there guns and ammo for you to try.you could use our front rests and rear bags if you want most hunting/foxing rigs wont have the wide forend on the stock that are needed on bench guns-that doesnt mean it wont work.

when i started at diggle in the 100yd br matches i shot a sako 6ppc off a bi pod and rear bag -then the bug bit me :)

Hi Folks,

Been working on the details of this, so here is an Update......

The format will be as follows

Each "Novice" will be buddied up with an existing BR shooter.

The "Novice" will do the shooting under the mentorship of the BR shooter and the day will take the same form as our normal competitions, so 6 x 5 shot groups.

1 x Warm Up match (doesnt count towards your agg) then 5 x 5 shot matches that do count towards your agg.

The smallest agg wins the day and the smallest individual group (including the warm up) gets a "Small Group Award"

The idea being that the novices will use their Buddie's "proper BR rifle all day", we will use wind flags etc.

It will be a fun comp and there will be prizes, some cash and nice certificates to put on your wall.

During the day you will need to reload on the firing point, clean your rifle etc and your mentor will guide you through it.

Idea being that at the start you need more help, and by the end you will be flying solo.

Does this all sound fun to people?

The number of "Novices" that can take part is dictated by the number of people we can get to mentor and loan rifles, but at the moment we are at about 7/8.

It is our AGM next weekend and I will try to get as many Mentors as possible signed up.

It will probably be a Sunday to avoid clashes with competitions etc.

If interested, please post your name below and as space is limited it will have to be on a first come first served basis.

Cheers

Bruce

Good Point

If people just want to shoot here own rifle thats not a problem, number is really only limited for those that want to shoot BR rifles as we only have a limited number of Buddy Guns

I will run a separate "Sporter" Class for those using Non-BR rifles.

Cheers

Hi Bruce,

I'd also like to be included if possible, please, particularly if it would allow me to learn how to reload on the firing point, so I can put this to good use when I start to load develop on my new 6.5-284.

I've also just had a 6mmPPC put on my ticket to compete in the 100yard BR next year.

I look forward to hearing how it goes at the AGM.

Would I also need to be a current member, or could I join after?

Cheers. Paul
