17hmr vertical stringing

Recommended Posts

Hi I have just fired my 17hmr (marlin xt) and the best group was about 3" vertical string at 50m. I have done the normal can on and off swapped the scope and rings , ive checked the action screws and the barrel is free floating. iam shooting 17grn honaday. I havnt been able to try another make of ammo yet . I hope its a ammo issue, any ideas?

With out being patronising, is your scope mounted right? Sounds like it's moving forward or back some how.

Generally HMR is bloody accurate. Regardless of the ammo.

Hi

when I bought my 17 a cz455 3months ago when I was testing ammo I found the Hornady ammo to be the best and to date the best group from them was .285" at 50m but that was after weighing all my rounds and batching them up in size order!

Mine also does well with the cci fmj ammo! not as good as the Hornady but still less than half inch at 50m

with this ammo the more iv shot the better it seems to be getting so persevere with it :)

As for yours giving you a 3" vertical spread I don't know!!

Does it get better or worse the more shots you do? and it might pay to weigh or measure the rim and grade your rounds and try again.

You say it's a new rifle, so was it acurate and now its gone off? I shoot a Anshwitz short barell its been good out to 150y I check it at 100yards. I've had problems with Hornady ammo big time. Once it miss fired and left the head in the barrel. I've now heard of this happening too 4 others. I was lucky, not under pressure, so checked and removed, the bullet. Spoke to an RCO whoe did a report on one that had blown up. He found the Hornady ammo was very dangerous. Back to yours I use wipe out on mine, it realy works well on this rifle. I remove the carbon with KG first. It shoots half inch at 100yards with no wind with Fedral ammo.

If it has always been like that then it sounds very much like a rifle problem, Some HMR's take a few rounds to settle in but not 3" at 50 yards! :o , you could achieve better than that with a catapult. when you say virtually stung are they in a straight line of are they scattered???

Photograph the crown and upload the pictures on here, crowns can be damaged when people use cleaning rods and jags, especially on little .17's.

I have looked at the crown and it looks fine , and the groups are straight up and down also it shot the same with several shooters.

My cz took a 100 or so rounds to bed in and although the barrel appeared to be free floating it was just just touching when warm.

I think your barrel will be touching somewhere , either as it heats up or when resting on the bipod or bag.

You could try taking it out of the stock and putting it back in or just playing with the torque settings.

Update on 17hmr. Got it sorted it was the ammo I was using , I have put some cci and Remington through it and it now does less than an inch at 100m . I also tried some Winchester and that looked like I had shot the target with a shot gun! Thanks to everyone who replied cheers neil.

Out of interest were you using Hornady?

If so email them with pictures and they will square you away. I had a batch with about 1in3 with a cracked neck, and some where the round had a horrible residue. They instructed a credit note or replacement ammo.

Eventually I had a credit note and purchased a whole new batch of CCI

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a CZ 452 .17hmr for 7 or 8 years and I never did manage to make it shoot well. I tried all sorts of different ammo, mods and scopes. I had the rifle checked by a smith who said it was fine.

I have given up on it and replaced it with a .22 Hornet which is far better.

I found my marlin XT shot poorly with all ballistic tip ammo then reluctantly threw some 20gr XTP hornady down it. I find the XTP's tend to pencil through a fair bit so I wasnt going to buy any. Be darned if it didnt shoot bugholes. Next option was 17gr TNT loads from federal. They shot just as good. Under an inch at 100yds. A previous marlin (pre takeover) shot even better.

Then stop cleaning it. Marlin used to recomend that you not clean their 17HMR barrels. I never cleaned mine. Only the chamber and action.~Andrew

I recently bought a Weihrauch HW 66 Jagdmatch .17hmr and spent a day testing ammo at both 50m and 100m.

Ammo tested was:

Hornady 17g

Hornady 20g HP

Hornady 15.5g

Federal 17g

Winchester 17g

CCI 17g HP

I was shocked at the difference in group size and the results.

Winchester was worst closely followed by Hornady 17g, the best performers were Hornady 20g HP and Federal 17g with CCI 17g HP a close 3rd.

What was shocking though was out of 200 Federal I had 35 split necks, BEFORE I shot a single round.

Its been said many times before but you really do need to spend time and test as many different brands of ammo you can get your hands on.
