visiter1 Posted August 1, 2014 Report Share Posted August 1, 2014 Hi lads just wondering if anyone ever encountered this, I was out last night with the drone on a 17 hornet ,I glassed over the field and found two young foxes hunting frogs, I set up for a shot on the first fox bang herd the bullet hit but the fox didnt move just looked about i put another bullet in for a second shot but the fox just ran off slowly i was amazed , Didnt seem to have hit him at all , and i have shot nearly 40 foxes this year witht the hornet , so back to the house and got my trusty lab out , raced back to the field and let him do his job , soon as he entered the field the dog had his trail and just into the next filed we found the fox clean heart and lungs shot , I never have hit a fox so well and have him react like that ?? anyone ever see this before? abolter Posted August 1, 2014 Report Share Posted August 1, 2014 I think the problem is worse with .17s. They just dont punch hard enough to knock stuff down. If the impact knocks them over they dont get back up. My 22/250 and 5mm pretty much put em down. My 30-06 165gr soft points dont expand enough and pass right through. It does happen, known of quite a few that have been hit well but kept running, and even just jumped and carried on as if not been hit at all, then just keeled over. Even with my 223 with Hornady supperformance vmax 53 grain bullets they can get 20 yards or so with really bad engine trouble. But 97 percent of the time they never move a mussel. visiter1 Posted August 1, 2014 Author Report Share Posted August 1, 2014 Ok i think i need to clarify the fox ran 20 ft how ever , what i was talking about was the fox didn even seem to be hit , i have foxes run from the 223 and the 6 br however i have never seen a fox not akcknoledge the shot, i also use a 25 grain balistic tip , and the fox only ran 20 feet. and i shot two more this eve just to be sure both droped where they stood, Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

garyw Posted August 3, 2014 Report Share Posted August 3, 2014 You probably need to shoot more, I've shot plenty over the years and from time to time you will get one that runs GAZ-i have shot the .17rem for nearly 15yrs now[august is the date] and can honestly say that i have only ever had one move i dont shoot them beyond 150 yds i have no need to.i use the .17 in summer for a walk about gun then in oct/nov i pop on a pvs 14 and clean up the stragglers.i average 35-40 with the .17 every year best year was in 2006 i accounted for 56 with the rem.i also use other calibres as well -22br and 6x47 i did get a few runners with a 6br i had using hp sierras i soon stopped using them and switched to 70gn blitz kings no runners. you know yourself if the fox is hit in the right spot it shouldnt move. I'd say that of the last 250 foxes I shot, it probably only happened once, but even that one looked as though it'd trodden on a land mine and shouldn't have been able to go anywhere. Toby Posted August 4, 2014 Report Share Posted August 4, 2014 Only shot 23 foxes with the 17 Rem so far. Of these all but one were DRT as our US pals call it. Have also used 222 rem and 6,5x55 and also had foxes run on with major damage only to fall later. They are dead, they just don't know it, especially if spooked or suspicious and full of adrenaline. Would have to agree with this wholeheartedly. I shot a fox one night with the 223 and heard the whack but the fox hardly even registered a hit at all. It run off maybe about 40 yards then just rolled forward stone dead. When we reached it there was hardly a mark on it at all. This was shot at about 80 yards with a 60 grain vmax which normally would make a mess of them. It's as if the bullet did not expand at all and just drilled a hole through it. jeffry Posted October 3, 2014 Report Share Posted October 3, 2014 hi,new here but i have shot a good few foxes over say.....20 years,use .243 75grain v-max,most drop on the spot,but every now and again i seem to get one that just wont give up,had a few run quite a distance hit square in the heart/lung area,bullet seems to expand fine do its job,just a dead fox running a short distance......cant really explane it,but as long as i find it dead,im happy Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
