Sean

At longer ranges I'm picking on a bit of the terrain or trees as the range finding target. The one and only long range fox I have shot was ranged to the standing timber about 8 yds behind it.

I know it's a big step up in budget, but having got range finding binocs now, I wouldn't go back to a separate range finder and binocs.

I have the zeiss you mention, it easily doubles as a monocular as it has a full size eyepiece, optics are very clear and it will range way past what you need very accurately, wouldn't be without mine but I do see the advantage of RF binos.

If you can mount on a small tripod it will enable a more precise measurement better of course for gongs, but I do use for longer range vermin but only out to about 450 my normal max range. Thats a nikon 1200.

I use a Vortex 1000. Lovely little rangefinder. Was thinking about a Leupold but came across this and it was cheaper and does exactly the same as a Leupold, plus also very ergonomic, adjustable ret brightness which is important, and also a red ret. and of course the VIP warranty, for life.

I ranged an bail at 1264 one day with it, supported of a car door. Probably be more consistent of my tripod.

Hope this helps, and chucks another into the mix for you.

Zeiss glass or Leica you can't go wrong with.

Sean, you have had some helpful replies, but on rereading them,I'm not sure anyone has actually confirmed the Leica can consistently range rabbits at 500y (specifically rabbits,as that is your intended useage.) I wish I could,as I have the Leica LRF1200 model, but have not used it to 500-it was certainly ok to about 300 for rabbits-just didn't have the opportunity to try it on rabbits at 500.No problem to twice that on sheep etc,but rangefinders depend on the reflectivity of the target-so a white sheep says noting about a much smaller brown bunny! I used the Leica on a range last Sunday-excellent light, but the Fig 11s had been painted a non reflective black, with only a 4" white square in the middle-and it struggled to range them at over 500 (about half the usual range). The Leica glass is very good. The issue of holding steady is also critical-I have a laser scope on a rilfe which is near perfect for steadiness-just like a scope-again,I can't confirm 500 rabbits, but you will probably need a steady device-for a while I had the Leica fixed onto a old rifle stock-much better, but more to carry! JCS 's suggestion of ranging on a nearby reflective large object works-if there is such close by.Small brown on green is not optimal.

Maybe some users will confirm performance explicity on rabbits, then you can go ahead (and I have not used the Leica 1600 at all-it may be better...these are not cheap when new, though leica models used are down to £250 -so if at all possible, wait a bit for clear confirmation,or try before you buy for your specific purpose,to be sure.
