Having a 6.5x47 built on my used STILLER PREDATOR action it will be bedded into a camo GRS stock , barrel will be 26'' and varmit profile . this will be used for target shooting with the odd outing for a fox . was planning to flute the barrel but is this a good idea ? also what about threading for a mod i was going to not use a mod . any suggestions ? i think the new barrel is a tru flight but i need to check . it should be ariving at gunsmith soon ...

I'm having a .260 built mate. Bedding in a grs sporter varmint stock in green mountain camo. Lother Walther barrel finished at 24" putting mod on mine. Running tac bolt and stainless rear shroud, third eye bottom metal with aics mag. All off a tikka t3 action. Will be a nice rifle. Really looking forward to getting my hands on a grs stock.

All the best.

Barrel fluting increases surface area by a quite small amount, which may help reduce barrel heating by a small amount;and fluting reduces barrel weight a small amount, which will increase recoil by a small amount.

The moderator adds a little weight, which reduces recoil a little in itself, but quite dramatically reduces the recoil,as well as sound.

That amount of recoil reduction much increases the rifles shoot ability-it does not muzzle flip nearly so much, nor jump in the rest, and the reduced recoil makes shooting more pleasant for most shooters, especially over a fair number of range rounds.

On balance, fluting is almost a cosmetic decision, unless you are just over some weight limit without it,but the moderator is a distinct advantage. The 6.5 is not a heavy recoiler, but less is generally better, unless you get a macho kick-a few sad souls do-in which case you'd probably have chosen a heavier recoiler.

ST i wouldn't bother with fluting unless u like the look and have the extra cash. Iv had both fluting an non and really dont think theres much in it . I initially had it on a custom barrel cause i liked the look . But my new .20 wont have it .

If you plan for the odd fox id use a moderator to save your hearing unless you plan to wear ear defendors in the field . Atb-tim

I think ill go with a plain muzzel and no fluting but whats recomended for barrel length ? 26'' ? or 24''

probably down to personal choice , but if your not using a moddy id keep it at 26 . unless your using from a vehicle you would probably need shorter perhaps - sounds a nice build , who is the smith / plummer may i ask ?

ST why dont you get it screw cut ? Even if you dont use a modderator if you ever sell it most rifles are s-cut ! Have you shot at night without a moderator ? In the wrong place / near houses it could be a problem ? Just thinking ahead as if the barrel being worked on it prob wont cost much more to have done ! Makes sence to me ! Atb-tim

+1 If you possibly can,try a similar cartridge/rifle (243...308,anything like that, with and without a moderator-if you really prefer unmoderated, then you can then make an informed decision (and it can be done later,of course-when you change your mind! :-)

Just found that its already fluted . i thought the gunsmith did that ! so im staying with orignal 26'' fluted and no mod , although threading for an EOB mod might be done just incase .. oh the barrel is a trueflite ultra match .hope its here soon , its in transit somewhere ...

I already have a sako85 SSV in .243 for roe and vermin but im sure ill want to try the 6.5x47 out on charlie sometime .
