brown dog
You'd be surprised. The people who have tiptoed the precipice here and felt the need to ask for rules have been exclusively civvies - but that's entirely irrelevant. We don't 'do' rules here - grown-ups should understand principles and 'ethos'. (Stacka: Core Values). I'd go further and say that anyone thinking that blindly following orders and process is a military 'thing' has no understanding of the most dynamic, output-focussed and pro-active organisation in the UK - an organisation with an unparalleled track record of success in massively complex and demanding environments.. If you wish to find people who slavishly follow orders, talk to a production line worker, a bank worker, a civil servant. There you'll find people who unimaginatively follow process and 'directives' in order to earn their crust and avoid being sacked; the people who aren't comfortable without 'rules'. So, Stacka, well done on the 'spot'. The fact that you can see the plagiarism doesn't invalidate the concept; it reads across perfectly to those incapable of making their own judgements of 'appropriate' and 'inappropriate' on this site. Or in other walks of life. Did you really feel the need to post? Again, well done on the spot etc, but..... value added? You'll find almost all civilian management process is a 'rob' of military process. Google the civvy concept of management by 'empowerment' and see if you recognise it If you can't see the direct applicability/ extrapolation of clever process from one situation to other situations; well there's nothing to say; that's a personal bandwidth issue. c18rch
I apologise if my comment touched a nerve but is was meant as a tongue in cheek dig in the same way as I read the original post to be a TIC dig at 'civvies'. The sort of banter you would expect whilst enjoying that 'single post shoot pint'. I have the upmost respect for anyone in the services. I work with all three services daily and have no doubts about their ability to think for themselves.

brown dog
Rich, Blimey, no need to apologise We've had a bit of a bow wave of umm, 'internet stupidity' of late and tolerance levels are stretched a little thin.
mikeroz
Steady on Brown Dog, I'm a Civil Servant and I work to ensure you guys get what you need. We are regularly misunderstood and criticised,; very often when people don't understand the complexity of the bigger picture. But, a lot of the "rule" are carefully thought through and there for good reason to ensure as far as is reasonably possible we get you; a. The right kit for the job. b. At the best price c. When it's needed. One of the biggest problems we continue to battle with is the size of the shopping list & not enough money to pay for it all. Now if the 3 services could between themselves agree on what was and wasn't needed that would help enormously. But please let's not forget the enormity and complexity of the shopping list and the number of customers we are dealing with because within the 3 services we deal with many many individuals on a daily basis each thinking their kit is more important than the next guy's, and who after all is right? Who knows! Sorry for that rant but I do hate people dissing us especially since I work bl$£dy hard haven't had a pay rise in 4 years but seen pension contributions increase year on year over the same period. sako 243
our boys They fought for a country, they fought for peace But in 2012 the gunfire still does not cease Being no more than a young lad To sign up to fight they did so and was glad No fear of what may come, no fear of the unknown But some feared that dreaded knock at home They put down their life, a battle they had to endure They gave their life for me when they went to war No time to be selfish for a task was at hand They done their best to defend our land I don't think I could be as brave as they are They took up the role, not for the pound, cent or dollar For queen and country, for the sake of mankind They said goodbye to their loved ones and left them behind All we have now are poppies and many unmarked graves Many are the names and many have been saved Who knows what would be if they didn't take up the fight Yet still there's gunfire at night A war is ongoing and will it ever end How many more troops are we going to send We have some of our 'boys' who think they are men But to fight for their country they'd think again I cannot repay you for your act of kindness shown Goodnight, God bless until you return home.
