6mmBR - 6mmBR NORMA ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, are these the same cartridge ? I've seen reloading dies and brass in each, but some internet sites say there the same cartridge.??? Yet some say there two completely different rounds ???

The same.Remington produced a generic short, thin wall, small primer 308 case (much like the earlier wildcat 308 X1 1/2in Barnes ),and Mike Walker at Remington-a (BR shooter, trying to emulate the PPC)-standardised SAAMI dimensions for the 6 BR Rem in 1978,(there were probably earlier 'wildcat' differences around),and in 1988 Remington produced factory ammunition in 6BR Rem.(see also 22BR and 7BR,using the same basic ,generic brass)

In 1996 ,Norma introduced the 6BR Norma chambering, virtually identical externally to the 6BR Rem case but with a longer neck (for the 'new' longer VLD target bullets).CIP (European equivalent of the American SAAMI) require a new name for any chambering (or cartridge) that differs from previous versions, hence the new name '6BRNorma'.

New rifles are now chambered in 6BR Norma. No problem at all: use Lapua brass , headstamped 6BR Norma. (it's about all you are likely to see.)

Thanks mate, I've spoken to baldie and a couple of other smiths, my friend has a tikka 595 22-250 left to him by his late father just sitting in his cabinet.i can have it a a very reasonable price, so I think il give it a go in the new year :) totally new calibre to me, but I've been living on the computer soaking up as much info as I can !! I already reload for my .223 so I have all the gear, but my press is only a lee turret, but it does the job. I might need to up grade it when I get a 6br die set. Are there any 6br users in kent I can glean done practical info off ?

Thanks for that Dave very helpful :) just another question, I know most dies and presses have a universal thread,so I'm just going to keep my lee turret press and get some 6mmbr dies. My question is what dies am I best going for In terms of make ? I've seen some 3 die sets and there pretty expensive !! I'm just looking at a standard de capper, re sizer and bullet seater two die set.

Have a look at the Forster two die sets, full length Or neck decap/sizer ,and seater around £65 a set;Redding will be £95.Either make come with some options for £more, like micro seaters ,bushing type dies, etc.Or a switch to hand dies like Wilsons, with an arbor press(£200 ish total)

If you have not checked out Accurate Shooter 6BR site, have a look-covers most basics and advanced,US oriented wrt powders etc but relevant. If you are in an indulgent xmas mood, check out the Sinclair International catalog/on line for lots of goodies, which you don't need, yet, but also including the above dies.

Nothing wrong with a lee press. I've had mine for years and cannot fault it at all. Cheaper than a lot of other presses and does the same job. Dies- now that's another story.

Excellent donor rifle action!! Mine is built on a M590 (identical footprint to the M595) and it hits rabbits at 500+yards first shot! and is cycling a 5-round magazine no problem. Go for it!! You won't regret it!

Best wishes
